Obituary: Phyllis (Topping) Campbell, 90, Formerly of Beverly

Phyllis (Topping) Campbell, 90, passed away in Marblehead on Friday.

Phyllis (Topping) Campbell, age 90 formerly of Amsterdam, NY, died peacefully on Friday, May 9, 2014 at The Devereux House in Marblehead.

Born in Amsterdam, NY, the daughter of the late John Topping and Teresa (Fitzgerald) Topping, she attended Amsterdam High School and graduated in the Class of 1940. Mrs. Campbell was the beloved wife of the late Attorney Donald A. Campbell, who was also a New York State assemblyman. During World War II, Mrs. Campbell worked at General Electric until she began her family and stayed home to be a homemaker and raise her three children. Mrs. Campbell resided in Amsterdam, NY until 1999, when she moved to Coburg Village in Rexford, NY. More recently, Mrs. Campbell resided in Beverly, MA.

Mrs. Campbell is survived by her two daughters, Patricia Roberts of Marblehead, MA and Nancy Girard and her husband Gerald of Chesapeake, VA; her daughter-in-law Aileen Campbell of Clifton Park, NY; five grandchildren: Rebecca Roberts and her husband Kevin Bau of Newton, MA; James Roberts of Brooklyn, NY; Gregory Campbell and his wife Kristin of Malta, NY; Michael Girard and his partner Joe Morales of Orlando, FL; Elizabeth Girard Howlett and her husband Austin of Richmond, VA; and her great grandson Owen Campbell Bau. Mrs. Campbell also leaves her brother Alfred Topping of Commerce, GA, several nieces, nephews and cousins. Mrs. Campbell was pre-deceased by her son James D. Campbell, and her brother Robert Topping.

The Campbell family is grateful to the compassionate staff at The Devereux House for their extraordinary care for Phyllis.

Visiting hours for Mrs. Campbell will be held at St. Ann’s Episcopal Church, 37 Division Street, Amsterdam, NY on May 17th from 10:00 A.M. until 11:00 A.M. followed by a Funeral service at 11:00 A.M.. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery, Amsterdam, NY. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make memorial contributions to: The Devereux House Resident’s Activity Fund, 39 Lafayette Street, Marblehead, MA 01945; or St. Ann’s Episcopal Church 37 Division Street, Amsterdam, NY 12010.
