Residents Approve Glover School Project

By a margin of 3,394 to 2,752, Marblehead residents approved the construction of a new Glover Elementary School.

Even before the unofficial results from Tuesday's Special Town Election made their way out of the Town Clerk's office last night, a handful of residents huddled together in Abboy Hall hugged, cheered and even cried after calculating early results from several polling stations that indicated Question 4 had passed.

The group of about 15 local residents were delighted with the results and must have felt some form of redemption after watching as the project was among the 10 questions shot down in last year's Special Town Election.

So, now that School Committee members have the go-ahead from town residents, now they have to build it. Here is what you need to know about the project:

The new Glover Elementary School will be 79,108 square feet and will be built on the same site that the school currently occupies. The new school will combine the student population of both and and will serve 425 students from kindergarten through the third grade. The total budget for the project is estimated to be $25 million and the state's School Building Authority will contribute 40 percent of the eligible costs for a total grant of $10 million.

The school building committee cut almost $2 million off the estimated costs that went to the Town Meeting last year. The savings were achieved with several design changes and relocating where the proposed school would sit on the site.
