Headers Flock to Orange Leaf Opening

Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt is now open for business.

The line of local residents looking to get their first taste of Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt stretched down Atlantic Avenue Friday afternoon as Marblehead's newest business opened its doors. Amid a crowd of local students, owner Michael Hennessy was happy to report that he had already sold some 500 cups by the time the afternoon rush subsided. "It really has been incredible," Hennessy said. "This is the first time it's slowed down a little bit all day." The new yorgurt chain, which offers customers the chance to mix and match their favorite frozen yogurt flavors and choose from a host of toppings, is the third to open in Massachusetts. There are already Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt shops open in Andover and Salem and additional locations are …

Opening Soon: Captn's Bakery

Marblehead's newest bakery is expected to open on Washington Street next week.

According to a sign recently posted in the front window, local residents can expect Captn's Bakery to open for business on June 1. The bakery is being opened in the Washington Street space formerly occupied by the Sea Gull Gift Shop by owners Jocelyn Flowers; her husband, Chad Flowers; and her father, Lynn Weekley. Earlier this spring, Jocelyn Flowers said the trio was hoping Captn's would be "an old-school bakery" and added that she plans on offering a wide variety of baked goods, including artisan bread, cakes, cookies, cupcakes and brownies. "We will be selling some soups too," Flowers said, "to go with our baguettes." What prompted the group to name the bakery Captn's? Jocelyn said the name, like the business, is rooted in family. "My …

Just Fabulous! Opening on Atlantic Avenue

A gourmet cake studio is expected to open on Atlantic Avenue next month.

Just Fabulous!, a special-order cake studio, is expected to open in the former home of the 40 Atlantic clothing store sometime next month. Opening the store is Ellyn Gimbel, who said in an email Wednesday that she is "looking forward to becoming a part of the magical community of Marblehead." Gimbel said she has been creating custom cakes for a variety of special events, including weddings and Bar/Bat Mitzvahs since 1995. "We're very excited about that location on Atlantic," Hennessy said Friday afternoon. "We've been given the go-ahead to start building and we should start swinging hammers sometime next week." The frozen yogurt store will have some competition - it is opening less than 100 yards from where Terry's Ice Cream Shop is expected to reopen later this summer. Visions of Vacancies

Bakery, Candy Shop to Open on Washington Street

Two recently vacated commercial properties on Washington Street will soon reopen as a bakery and a candy shop.

In the coming weeks, two empty storefronts on Washington Street will be transformed into Marblehead's newest businesses - a bakery and a candy shoppe. According to local Remax real estate agent Rich Cooper, the space at 152 Washington St., formerly rented by Bliss Home, has been claimed and will be turned into a candy shoppe. Just two doors down, the former home of the Sea Gull Gift Shop, located at 146 Washington St., will be reopening as a bakery, he said. Cooper said construction inside both spaces is expected to begin next week and added that Gerry Kaplan, who helped him rent out the bakery, has coined the area "calorie corner." Both properties were recently featured in our weekly Visions of Vacancies column and one of our readers …
