Spring sports at Marblehead High School are underway, with many teams looking to build on their success in 2012. Around Marblehead, youth sports are also underway and we want to help share all the great moments and highlights from this spring with the community. Marblehead and Swampscott Varsities Square Off on Diamonds

The Marblehead girls softball team was leading Swampscott 8-3 after 4 innings on Monday. Meanwhile, the Swampscott boys baseball team won 1-0.

The Marblehead girls softball team combined aggressive at bats with aggressive base running Monday against Swampscott on Big Blue's home turf. The Headers had an 8-3 lead in the 4th inning. Meanwhile, over in Marblehead on the baseball diamond, Swampscott's Trevor Massey went the distance pitching the Big Blue to a 1-0 victory. Swampscott Coach Jason Calichman said it was an exciting and well played game. Corey Carmody delivered a clutch two-out single in the sixth to push across the game winner for Swampscott, the team's second victory of the season. The Swampscott baseball and softball teams are back in action Wednesday against Beverly, the girls playing on the road at 4 p.m. and the boys playing at home at 4:30 p.m. The Magicians …

Marblehead and Swampscott Hockey Face-off Wednesday

Marblehead defeated Rockport 4-2 Saturday night to advance to the semi-finals.

  The table is set for a Marblehead and Swampscott showdown after the Magicians defeated Rockport 4-2 in the quarter-finals of the North Div. 3 tournament Saturday in Stoneham. Swampscott advanced to the semis with a convincing 10-1 defeat of St. Joseph Prep earlier on Saturday in Stoneham.  The puck drops for rivals Marblehead and Swampscott Wednesday at 5:10 p.m. on the Chelmsford Forum ice. The other two teams remaining in the North Div. 3 tournament are Shawsheen and Bedford. The No. 1 seed in the tournament, Lowell, was ousted in a shoot-out (4-3) against Bedford. The Magicians received a bye in the first round of the tournament by virtue of their No. 2 seed and 17-5 record. And the Big Blue also received a bye in the tournament's …

Wrestler Off to Terrific Start at New England Championships

Marblehead senior Sean Taylor, a captain on the combined Marblehead/Swampscott Black & Blue wrestling team, won his first two matches Friday at the New England High School Wrestling Championships.

  A historic season continues for the combined Marblehead/Swampscott High School wrestling program as senior Sean Taylor turned heads and pinned opponents on the first day of the New England championships in Providence, RI. The Marblehead senior, who wrestles in the heavyweight division, will square off against Donovan Lozado of Chicopee, the no. 2 seed from Massachusetts today, Saturday. On Friday, in his first match, the Marblehead heavyweight pinned John Ware of Manchester West, NH in the first period at around the one-minute mark. At the time it was the sixth fastest pin of the evening. Magicians No. 2 Seed in Hockey Tourney

Marblehead High is preparing for a post-season run after a 17-win season.

The Marblehead boys' hockey team notched 17 victories against only five defeats in the 2012-13 season. Now the skaters are tournament bound. The Div. 3 North Sectional tournament brackets are below. Marblehead plays March 2, against the winner of the Wayland and Rockport game on Feb. 28.  Marblehead earned a bye in the first round by virtue of its winning record and No. 2 seed. PHOTOS: Updated Marblehead Divers and Swimmers Compete in NECs

The diving competition and the 500 swim were held on Tuesday at Salem State. The rest of the evens were held on Wednesday, also at Salem State.

Marblehead divers won the boys and the girls competitions at the NECs on Tuesday at Salem State. Tyler Phillips won the girls division and Jake Driscoll the boys. The divers and swimmers competed at Salem State in the NEC meet on Tuesday and Wednesday.  On Tuesday, the diving competition and the 500 race took place. The 500 swimmers were Harrison Rodts, Ryan Alexander, Jessica Attridge and Zoe Daher.

Pre-Thanksgiving Powderpuff Ritual Kicks Off Friday Night

Senior girls from Marblehead and Swampscott will tangle in their annual flag football clash at Piper Field. Admission is $5. Proceeds benefit the home team's charity of choice. This year it is juvenile diabetes research.

Marblehead High School math teacher Larry McWilliams said the the spirit exhibited at last year's flag football game between Marblehead and Swampscott's senior girls exceeded that shown at any other game he had seen on a high school athletic field. "The spirit of this powder puff game is equal to three or four boys' games," he said. The action promises to be equally intense when the lady Magicians hit the gridiron against their Big Blue counterparts under the lights at Piper Field Friday at 7 p.m.  The Magicians will be out to redeem last year's loss at Blocksidge in Swampscott. Sports are an important part of kids’ lives, not just for physical fitness, but for team building and social skills as well.

We all know that sports keep children active. Active children lead healthier lifestyles, as sports keep them moving, burning calories and give kids an option other than sitting in front of a screen. There’s no question that involving kids in sports from an early age is beneficial, but it can help in more ways than the physical.
