Orange Leaf Opening Raises $4,000

The Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt Grand Opening raised more than $4,000 in charitable funds.

The grand opening of Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt on Atlantic Avenue raked in $4,400, all of which will be split between the Abbot Public Library and the town's Recreation and Parks Commission, owner Michael Hennessy said Saturday. The frozen yogurt chain's new Marblehead location opened earlier this summer to rave reviews and Hennessy decided to donate all of the proceeds from his big grand opening to local athletes and the local library. There are already Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt shops open in Andover and Salem and additional locations are expected to open soon in Belmont, Lexington, Melrose, Newburyport, Newton, Reading, Seekonk and Westford, according to the company's website. Headers Flock to Orange Leaf Opening

Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt is now open for business.

The line of local residents looking to get their first taste of Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt stretched down Atlantic Avenue Friday afternoon as Marblehead's newest business opened its doors. Amid a crowd of local students, owner Michael Hennessy was happy to report that he had already sold some 500 cups by the time the afternoon rush subsided. "It really has been incredible," Hennessy said. "This is the first time it's slowed down a little bit all day." The new yorgurt chain, which offers customers the chance to mix and match their favorite frozen yogurt flavors and choose from a host of toppings, is the third to open in Massachusetts. Teen Artists Give Shop a Local Touch

A small group of art students recently painted a locally-inspired mural on the wall of the new yogurt shop on Atlantic Avenue.

Thanks to a handful of teen artists, the new Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt shop on Atlantic Avenue will have a local touch when it opens on Friday. Nine Marblehead High School National Art Honor Society students have spent the last month painting a mural of a sailboat in Marblehead Harbor, with Chandler Hovey Park in the background. Under the guidance of NAHS advisors Karen Gourley Lehman and Pascale Queral, the local girls used a projector to recreate an original drawing on the rear wall of Marblehead's new yogurt shop. The artists were: Jessica Cowan, Victoria Kearney, Abby Nye, Sarah Katz, Stephanie Lundgren, Sarah Cohen, Nicole Shauffer, Lily Roberts and Maddy McKeever.

Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt Opens Friday

Here's a look inside Marblehead's new Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt on Atlantic Avenue.

Marblehead's new Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt on Atlantic Avenue is expected to open for business on Friday. Owner Michael Hennessy was hard at work Monday afternoon, putting the finishing touches on the frozen yogurt chain's newest location - which will offer local residents the chance to mix and match their favorite frozen yogurt flavors and choose from a wide variety of toppings. The idea, Hennessy said, is to provide local residents with a place to hang out, relax and satisfy their urges for something sweet. "Everyone has been really great so far," Hennessy said. "We have a meeting with the building inspector this week and if all goes to plan we should be open on Friday." Orange Leaf is unlike other frozen yogurt locations in that …

A pause at the bulk bins or sample bowls at the grocery will reveal how children (the second mom's back is turned) will go digging, take a lick, and plop what they didn't care for right back in the bowl for others to "savor". No, thank you. I would rather not have the toppings exposed for little (& big) fingers to be dipping into at will.   more ›
