Kiki Gilligan got a double helping of frozen yogurt goodness over the weekend. The Marblehead girl was at Massachusetts General Hospital over the weekend for a "tune-up" — treatment for Cystic Fibrosis, said her mom, Amy Gilligan. Cystic Fibrosis is a genetic disease affecting roughly 30,000 Americans and often attacks the digestive and respiratory systems. While daughter and mom were at the hospital, Kiki's dad, Patrick, and her brother, Jackson, and sister, Alli, were at home with a plan. They called an order in to Orange Leaf yogurt. Store owner Mike Hennessy assembled a frozen yogurt care package for Kiki and her brother and sister. Then Patrick and Jackson and Alli sprang into action. The self-serve frozen yogurt bar will now be providing arts and crafts activities and other fun programs for kids during the day.
January is a tough time to be in the self-serve frozen yogurt business. That's what has prompted Orange Leaf Marblehead owner Mike Hennessy, who opened the local franchise last summer, to branch out during some of his slowest business hours of the day to encourage youngsters and their caretakers to stop down and play a while as they sample the 70 flavors of FroYo and toppings. Hennessy says "Arts & Craft Time" starts up Feb. 4 and will run daily through May from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. with tables supplied with paints, markers, Crayons and drawing paper.
