Battling Winter Weather

With the cool fall days replaced by the biting cold ones of winter, runners need to take certain steps to keep themselves healthy and active until the warm weather returns.

I am not partial to outdoor running in the winter, as you can probably tell by reading my recount of the Wild Turkey road race on Thanksgiving morning. I often choose treadmills until I can head back out onto the streets without needing extra layers for comfort. But for those of you running purists, who always prefer true paths to the repetitive indoor mills, here are some recommendations from a few of my running and athletic training contemporaries. "A few things I do include wearing mittens instead of gloves to keep the hands warm (or a combo). I dress appropriately, but always factor in that you are going to warm up and 50 layers may not feel that great once you start sweating." "When I run from home, I always start into the wind so the…

The varsity boys basketball team will be playing at the York, ME Invitational while the varsity boys hockey team takes part in the Haverhill High School tournament. Quigley Sets MHS Football Scoring Record

In scoring his 18th touchdown of the season on a 46-yard run in the first quarter of the Marblehead-Swampscott Thanksgiving Day game, junior running-back Will Quigley set a new Marblehead High School single season football scoring record with 112 points.

It was an up and down year for the 5-6 (3-2 NEC) Marblehead Football team, who were trying to rebuild after the school's first trip to the Super Bowl in 2009, but a bright spot in the wake of a losing season was the production of junior running-back Will Quigley. Quigley started playing football in the third grade, and cites his grandfathers as influences in choosing the sport. During the 2010 campaign, he racked up 15 rushing touchdowns, two TDs on pass receptions and one on a fumble return, as well as two-2 point conversions. In scoring his 18th touchdown of the season, on a 46-yard run in the first quarter of the Marblehead-Swampscott Thanksgiving Day game Quigley set a new Marblehead High School single season football scoring record …

Black and Blue Wrestlers Drop Three Matches in Three Days

Dropping three matches in as many days, the Marblehead/Swampscott wrestling team fell to 0-3 and suffered critical injuries to its already depleted roster.

As if things couldn't get any tougher for the Marblehead/Swampscott wrestling team, it suffered three more losses in as many days and had its already low numbers reduced further with injuries to four starters over the last week and a half. "We have been decimated by injury, with four starters going down in the last 12 days or so," said Black and Blue head coach Mike Stamison."The only way to win dual meets now is to pin everyone, which is something easier said than done." The week started off against wrestling powerhouse Billerica on Monday, Dec. 20. The Marblehead/Swampscott team battled with the Indians, getting wins from Jason Veytsman and Sean Taylor at the 140 and 285 lb. weight-classes respectively. Billerica proved too deep for the …

Magicians Track Teams Drop Meet at Peabody

The Marblehead track teams went up against a strong Peabody program and came out with their first losses of the season, dropping to 1-1.

It was a battle of two track powers on Monday, as the Marblehead Magicians (1-1) took on the Peabody Tanners (2-0) at Peabody Veterans Memorial High School. When the final gun had sounded, the Tanners took away wins in both the boys and girls competitions, with 52-34 and 46-40 scores respectively. The girls meet was a back and forth battle, as both teams dominated certain events, but in the end it was Peabody's ability to take more first place finishes that made the difference. The home team swept both of the field events, as Amanda Nielsen (4'8"), Sarah May (4'6"), and Catarina Rocha (4'6") went 1-2-3 in the high jump, and Pamela Zabala (29'11"), Lauren Zaimes (27'5"), and Lea Qirjazi (27'3") took the top three spots in the shot put. …

Boys Basketball Improves to 2-0 With Win Over Danvers

The Marblehead boys basketball team improved to 2-0 with a 90-67 win over the Danvers Falcons on Friday.

The Danvers boys basketball team took an early 5-3 lead over Marblehead on Friday, at Marblehead High School, but the hosts wouldn't surrender the lead again for the rest of the game as the Magicians downed the Falcons 90-67. "I don't think we have scored 90 points here in maybe six years," admitted Marblehead head coach Wayne Hanscom after the win, "so we were real happy with offense tonight." The Falcons (0-2) offense was spearheaded by Shawn Mahegan, who led all scorers with 28 points; this included six three-pointers, four of which came in the third quarter. The Magicians (2-0) were led by Tommy Stockwell and Brian Gellert, who scored 25 points each. After tying the game at five, Marblehead went on an 8-0 run to extend its lead to 13-5…

Magicians Winter Sports Preview

Here is a look at each of the winter teams and what they look to bring to the court, pool, ice, mat, beam/bars/floor and track this season.

It is time for the winter seasons to begin and here is a brief look into what the winter Magicians' teams have to offer: 2009-10 record: 2-10 Last season was one of highs and lows for the Marblehead/Swampscott wrestling team. The team was unable to put together many wins as a whole, but it saw two individuals achieve personal success at the Sectional, Conference and State levels. Unfortunately, Kristian Kotov (Swampscott) and Jonathan Taylor (Marblehead) both graduated in 2010, leaving big shoes to fill in their weight-classes. Stamison expects seniors Jason Veystman (140 lbs., Marblehead) and Brian Ewart (160 lbs., Swampscott), junior Jeff Sherman (130 lbs., Marblehead), and sophomore Jake Powell (103 lbs., Swampscott) to play significant…

Marblehead/Swampscott Wrestlers Have Tough Start at NEC Tournament

The Marblehead/Swampscott wrestling team dropped all three of its matches at the Northeastern Conference tournament.

The Marblehead/Swampscott wrestling team was fighting an uphill battle all day at the Northeastern Conference tournament, which took place on Saturday at Salem High School. The team had to forfeit the 145 and 189 pound matches during each event because it had no wrestler to fill the weight-class, putting the team behind by 12 points from the start. The event pitted the Marblehead/Swampscott team against local competitors Salem, Georgetown/Ipswich, and Winthrop/Saugus. Peabody and Beverly also competed at the tournament, but neither faced off against Marblehead/Swampscott. In its first Pool B match, the local team fell to host Salem by a score of 60-18. In the next Pool match, against Georgetown/Ipswich, the 'Black and Blue' wrestlers once …
