Leaf Blower Ban Narrowly Defeated

A proposal to ban leaf blowers in Marblehead was defeated at Town Meeting Tuesday night.

A proposal calling for a seasonal ban on the use of gas-powered leaf blowers in Marblehead was defeated by less than 100 votes at Town Meeting Tuesday night. The majority of those gathered at Marblehead Veterans Middle School voted in favor of indefinitely postponing the seasonal ban, which would have run from Sept. 15 to May 15, by a margin of 285 to 211. Prior to opening the floor to comments from the public, the article's sponsor and longtime resident Christopher Bergonzi used his time at the podium to challenge opponents to dispute the health risks associated with gas-powered leaf blowers. "I and many others believe that the use of leaf blowers in Marblehead has become increasingly excessive and incessant and poses serious health risks…

Old Town House Renovations Approved

A project aimed at making the Old Town House universally accessible was approved at Town Meeting.

A project aimed at making Marblehead's Old Town House universally accessible, which was defeated in last year's Special Town Election, was overwhelmingly supported by local residents at Town Meeting Tuesday night. The $675,000 project, which calls for the installation of a three-story elevator and two handicapped bathrooms, was unanimously endorsed by the town's Board of Selectmen and passed by a margin of 456 to 30. Among those endorsing the project Tuesday night was selectman Judie Jacobi, who said it was a shame that the Old Town House couldn't be used for local meetings, debates and gatherings. "We could hold political debates in the same room where Elbridge Gerry and Gen. John Glover debated independence and where events were held …

We are today's stewards of the Old Town House...stewards not only of its legacy but also its future. Keeping this building accessible, vibrant and accessible is our present day responsibility. Why would any one of us want to deny anyone else - resident or visitor - physical access to any public building in our town? And why would anyone choose to deny anyone else access to this particular …   more ›

Voters OK $4.9M Drainage Project

Town Meeting voters approved a proposed three-year, $4.9 million drainage project.

Marblehead residents overwhelmingly approved a Town Meeting article Monday night calling for a debt-exclusion override to pay for a proposed three-year $4.9 million drainage project. Monday's approval, which passed by a margin of 576 to 10, means the extensive drainage project will appear on the Special Town Election ballot next month. Among the handful of town residents who spoke in favor of the project was Ben Rhodes, owner of the Pleasant Street building currently occupied by Hooked Seafood and Grill and Worldly Pets. Prior to the vote, Rhodes told those in attendance how hard it was to "not to be able to sleep at night" if he knew there would be "more than a few inches of rain in the forecast." "I've seen more than eight feet of water …

from R. Cline, Calling socialists liberals is as deceptive as calling goose gizzards foie gras. It fools no one but the epistemologically blinkered. The term liberal allows liberals to pose as concerned, generous and forward-thinking individuals and to act under what was once an honorable term for anyone who advocated or endorsed liberty. And as any well-read American knows, liberals do not …   more ›

Marblehead Fire Department

$1.2M Quint Ladder Truck Approved

Local voters unanimously supported the purchase of a new $1.2 million quint ladder truck at Town Meeting Monday night.

The Marblehead Fire Department's request for a new $1.2 million quint ladder truck was unanimously approved by the some 600 local residents at Town Meeting Monday night. Before those gathered within the Performing Arts Center at Marblehead Veterans Middle School put it to a vote, Fire Chief Jason Gilliland took to the podium in an effort to explain how a state-of-the-art ladder truck would help local firefighters better-serve town residents. "This purchase is costly, but in my professional opinion as your fire chief, it is necessary," Gilliland said. "The department's apparatus committee and I have worked for a year researching a draft of the specifications to ensure that taxpayer money will be spent on a quality piece of fire apparatus …
