Marblehead Selectmen Approve Appointment of New Police Captain

The Marblehead Police Department added a new permanent Captain Wednesday night.

With the full support of the Board of Selectmen, the Marblehead Police Department added a new full-time captain to the force Wednesday night. During their meeting at Abbot Hall, board members unanimously approved a request from Marblehead Police Chief Robert Picariello to promote Lt. Matthew Freeman to the rank of captain. Freeman, who has been a member of the department since 1995, has been serving as a temporary captain ever since Capt. Mark Mills retired in July. "Matthew has an unblemished record and has proven to be an asset to the department in countless ways," Picariello said. "I believe that Matt embodies the finest qualities as a person as well as a supervisor and he is undoubtedly the correct person for this position."

Wow, how can we find out who was driving? That's a tough one. If only the boys who were in the car could tell the police. Oh, wait! They can, but they won't. By the way, a driver not wearing a seatbelt could easily end up in the back seat in a crash that violent.   more ›

How Many Marblehead Residents Have Gun Permits?

President Barack Obama's proposals for new gun control measures have everyone talking. But do you know how many of your neighbors might be armed?

In the wake of the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary, President Barack Obama has made several new proposals for increased gun control. That got us thinking. How many Marblehead residents have a gun license? The answer: 849, if you're talking about the most common type of gun license. In bureaucratic-speak, that's the "Resident Class A Large Capacity License to Carry Firearms." According to the Globe, it's the only Massachusetts license that lets individuals carry a concealed weapon and own any type of legal gun. To put that 849 person figure in context, Marblehead's population is 19,808 according to the 2010 Census. That means about 4 percent of Headers have the most common type of gun license. Since 2008, the number of people with a gun …

$1,000 Bail for Man Charged With Marblehead Rape

A Peabody man charged with raping a woman in Marblehead Sunday was ordered held on $1,000 cash bail Thursday in Lynn District Court.

A Peabody man accused of raping a Marblehead woman on Washington Street Sunday evening denied charges associated with the alleged attack in court Thursday morning. Alex H. McMaster, 38, of 8 Walnut St., Peabody, pleaded not guilty Thursday to charges of rape and assault and battery. Judge Ellen Flately set his bail at $1,000 cash and ordered that he stay away from and have no contact with the alleged victim. Flately opted to continue McMaster's case Wednesday afternoon after the alleged victim and McMaster each had a chance to testify. The victim, who said she was drunk at the time of the attack, has made rape allegations against McMaster twice before, only to drop them.
