Second Half Effort Powers Wilmington Past Boys' Soccer

Marblehead entered halftime in a scoreless tie before Wilmington cruised to a 4-0 victory in the North Division 2 first round.

The Marblehead boys soccer team hadn’t allowed a goal in 120 minutes of playoff action. Wilmington put an end to that streak in the second half of Sunday’s North Division 2 playoff tilt. After entering halftime in a scoreless draw, the No. 3 seed Wildcats poured home four goals in the final 40 minutes and went on to eliminate the Magicians with a 4-0 victory. “Wilmington was fast and physical,” said Marblehead mentor Scott Laramie. “That’s a good squad and I’m glad that we played them. That’s going to be a building block for next year.” Just over two minutes into the second half, Wilmington took the lead for good with a goal off of a long throw in. Strong Effort Not Enough As Wilmington Eliminates Girls' Soccer

Wilmington peppered the Marblehead defense with scoring chances, but the Magicians hung tight before falling, 1-0, to end their season.

Marblehead only allowed Wilmington to score on one of their long list of golden scoring opportunities. Unfortunately for the Magicians, that one tally was all it took. The host Wildcats cashed in on a rebound midway through the second half on Sunday and went on to earn a 1-0 win in the first round of the North Division 2 postseason, eliminating No. 11 Marblehead from the playoffs. “We were able to do some things, but there were some things we kind of lacked in tonight,” said Magicians head coach Andrew Bub. “But I think the girls have absolutely nothing to put their heads down about.” Goaltender Cassie Rodgers was the star of the game for Marblehead.
