Marblehead entered halftime in a scoreless tie before Wilmington cruised to a 4-0 victory in the North Division 2 first round.
The Marblehead boys soccer team hadn’t allowed a goal in 120 minutes of playoff action. Wilmington put an end to that streak in the second half of Sunday’s North Division 2 playoff tilt. After entering halftime in a scoreless draw, the No. 3 seed Wildcats poured home four goals in the final 40 minutes and went on to eliminate the Magicians with a 4-0 victory. “Wilmington was fast and physical,” said Marblehead mentor Scott Laramie. “That’s a good squad and I’m glad that we played them. That’s going to be a building block for next year.” Just over two minutes into the second half, Wilmington took the lead for good with a goal off of a long throw in. The game’s second goal, however, wasn’t as cut and dry. Wildcat forward flicked the ball …

Up to date information regarding local youth and high school sports.
The final weeks of the fall sports season are upon us, and there are only two high school teams still competing. The football team lost one and won one recently, dropping a game to Beverly but rebounding with a win over Winthrop. The cross-country teams are both still in the hunt for State Championship hardware, as both the girls and boys qualified for the All-State Meets with third and fourth place finishes at the Eastern Mass. Divisional Championships. Marblehead Youth Football ended a very successful season in the Cape Ann Youth Football League, with two teams winning their Super Bowls, as the 8th Grade defeated Lynnfield 22-0 and the 6th Grade topped North Reading 26-20 in overtime. --- Home vs. Swampscott 5 p.m. J.V. After solid performances at the MIAA Eastern Mass Cross-Country Championships at Franklin Park, the Marblehead High boys and girls teams both advanced to the All-State meets.
The Marblehead cross-country teams both extended their seasons another week, as the boys finished in fourth place and the girls took third in the Division IV races at the MIAA Eastern Mass Cross-Country Championships on Saturday at Franklin Park. The NEC Champion girls were led once again by junior Mary Kauffman, who earned a medal for her fifteenth place finish at 20:41. "I feel really good about getting a medal today," said Kauffman, "because the last two times we ran for medals I was one [place] off. So I was glad not to be one off today." "I didn't think I was going to get to run this course, since I just started this year after playing soccer for the past two years," admitted Kauffman, "so I was really excited to get to run Franklin …

The fall season is winding down and most of the MHS teams have completed their seasons. The Magicians had all-stars selected from nearly all of their fall teams. Though the boys and girls soccer teams missed the post season, both had all-star selections. Mike Brenan and Nick Alvarez were honored for the boys and Hayley Braun, Kathryn Digiammarino, and Cassie Rodgers for the girls. The girls' team also earned the NEC North Team Sportsmanship Award. Andrew Scholnick and Connor Green were selected as NEC all-stars for the Magicians golf team. The Magicians end their season at 15-2-2, and will face a tough challenge next season as they graduate 16 seniors.
The Marblehead Varsity Field Hockey team had been close to unbeatable this year, only losing a single game to Beverly, the 17-0-1 NEC Champions. The Magicians earned the #3 seed in the MIAA Division II North tournament and were matched up against the #14 Bishop Fenwick Crusaders (9-8-1) on Wednesday, at Seaside Park. The teams battled in a very close game, playing a scoreless 60 minutes of regulation in which the Marblehead girls narrowly outshot the Fenwick side 11-9. The back-and-forth trend continued into overtime, with Fenwick controlling the ball for the first 15 minute period of 7 v. 7 action, but they were unable to get a shot past Marblehead senior goalie Carly McIver. McIver, an NEC All-star, has been as solid as a goalie can be …

The MHS girls took first at the NEC XC Championships, while the boys followed a third place dual record with third at the NEC’s.
The Marblehead cross-country girls have been close to unstoppable this season, running away from the Northeastern Conference regular season with a 7-0 record. The Lady Magicians continued their conference domination with a first place overall finish at Saturday's NEC Cross-Country Championships at Bradley Palmer State Park in Topsfield. The Marblehead girls won the championship by a large margin, only posting 34 points against a 53 point performance from the Peabody Tanners. Leading the way to Marblehead's victory were Mary Kauffman (20:20) and Chloe Heskett (20:32), who claimed second and third place respectively; Peabody's Catarina Rocha dominated the race, finishing in first place with a time of 18:14. Solidifying the Magicians' …

Tennis teams lose a close quarterfinal match to Boston Latin, 2-3.
The Marblehead Boys Tennis team had a season to remember. They finished a perfect 16-0 in the New England Conference, capturing the Conference Title and securing a first-round bye as the number one seed in the MIAA Division 2 North tournament. They played to an amazing 18-2 overall record, only losing to a very tough St. John's Prep team in an out of conference match during the regular season and a very close 2-3 match against eighth seed Boston Latin Monday afternoon in the tournament Quarter Finals. "This is an awesome accomplishment that the whole program should be proud of," said coach Elisabeth Foukal, who is in her third year with Marblehead. "It starts with a lot of support from [Athletic Director] Mr. Plansky and [Athletics/PE …

MHS Girls and Boys Lacrosse teams suffer second-round losses.
After an exhilarating 10-9 (overtime) win over Wayland in the Preliminary Round of the Division 2 East tournament, Marblehead found themselves outmatched by the fifth seed Walpole Rebels, last year's State Champions. Walpole, who plays in the competitive Bay State League, controlled the game from the first whistle and defeated the Magicians 15 to 4. The Rebels will face the four-seed Reading Hornets on Tuesday. Marblehead, who finished the regular season in second place in the NEC, ends 2010 with a respectable 14-6 record. The Headers, whose conduct on the field earned them the Team Sportsmanship Award, had five players selected to the NEC-Large All-Star Team: Midfielders Jess Lipkind and Ellory Smith, Defensemen Alex Haigis and Matt Evans…

Advances to Quarterfinals in MIAA D2 North Tournament.
It was a beautiful day at Marblehead High School and the fifth-seeded Magicians made all the right moves to defeat their Northeastern Conference foe, the 12th seeded Beverly Panthers, in the first round of the Division 2 North tournament on Friday. The line up that Coach Tim Stonecipher chose seemed to be a surprising one, since it was without his 1st Team All-Conference Doubles squad of Annie Ryan and Lindsey Cohen. Ryan and Cohen played a perfect 12-0 doubles record during their all-star regular season. "Having already played [Beverly] we had an idea of how we would match up best," said Stonecipher. "I went with the lineup that gave us the best opportunities and match-ups." Stonecipher's strategy worked; the Magicians rolled through …

First-round loss ends team's postseason dreams.
The Marblehead Varsity baseball team did everything it could to get itself into the postseason, earning victories in must-win back-to-back games against Swampscott and Salem, but its postseason ended as quickly as it began. Facing off against the third-seed Reading Memorial High School Hornets, who finished second in last year's state tournament, proved too much for the 14th seed Magicians as they fell 9-0 in the Division 2 North first-round game Friday afternoon in Reading. The game, which began on Thursday, was postponed because of inclement weather with Marblehead trailing by two runs after three innings. When play resumed Friday afternoon, the Hornets opened up their lead beyond the Header's reach. The Magicians end their season at 10-…
