Black and Blue Captains Prevail at Big Red Tourney

Two Swampscott-Marblehead wrestlers won medals in the 2011 Tyngsboro Big Red Tournament. The team earned 56.5 points in the tournament and placed 11th overall in the 16-team tournament. "I was very pleased with the way the co-captains Jeff (Sherman) and Jake (Powell) wrestled, they led their team by example," said Coach Mike Stamison. Other bright spots were Maleek Newsome winning his first varsity match at 170 lbs by executing a text book bow-and-arrow cradle, twisting his opponent up and pinning him for the win, the coach said. Powell, a Swampscott junior, won first place in the 113-pound weight class and Sherman, a Marblehead senior, took fourth place in the 126-pound weight class.
