The Jewish Community Center hosted their 12th Annual Triathlon by the Sea Sunday.

Hundres of area athletes pushed themselves to the limit Sunday morning as they ran, swam and biked their way across town during Jewish Community Center's Triathlon by the Sea. Congratulations to all of the local athletes who participated.

High Jumpers Shine at State Relay

Marblehead High School's girl's track team's high jumpers took home the gold at the Division II State Relays.

The following information was provided by MHS girls' track coach Michael Toomey: Marblehead High School's girls track team had a big day at Div. III State Relays in Pembroke over the weekend, scoring 22 points. The highlight of the day came in the high jump, where the team of Celina Variam, Kelly Roland, and Lily Cummings took home the gold with a combined jump of 14 feet 9 inches. Other scoring teams included the distance medley with a third place finish. Kathleen Huber had her best race as a freshman leading off in the the 1200 and Kelly Roland, Paige Ferrucci, and Janaya Randall moved up the pack and secured the third place medal. The spring medley team got a strong leadoff leg from Paige Ferrucci and turned that into a fourth place …

Magicians Fall to Big Blue 11-10

It was a seesaw game and Swampscott took an 11-8 lead into the last inning vs. Marblehead and had to dig in to survive a two-run home run in the top of the seventh.

The lead in the baseball game between Marblehead and Swampscott Tuesday swung back and forth four or five times, ending with the Magicians unable to quite swing it back one last time. The final: 11-10. For seven innings Marblehead and Swampscott were mirror images of each other. Marblehead showed patience at bat then squared up timely hits. Swampscott took free passes then hitters delivered key hits. The Magicians hit the ball on the nose. Big Blue hit the ball on the nose. Marbleheard hit a homer. Swampscott hit a homer. Swampscott coach TJ Baril brought in relief pitchers. Marblehead coach Jason Tarasuik brought in relief pitchers. Tarasuik was happy with the effort from his team. Schneider Earns Starter Status in Vancouver

Marblehead native Cory Schneider will take over as the starting goaltender for the Vancouver Canucks, according to the Vancouver Sun.

Marblehead native Cory Schneider, who had some big games in net against the Boston Bruins in last year's Stanley Cup Finals, has been officially handed the starting position as net-minder in Vancouver, according to a story in the Vancouver Sun. Schneider shone in the Cancucks' game against the L.A. Kings Wednesday night, effectively saving the team's season by making 43 saves and turning away some last-minute scoring chances. According to the Vancouver Sun report, team officials will look to trade former starter Roberto Luongo and his 12-year, $64-million contract sometime this summer. Schneider played for Marblehead High School in his freshman year and later started in net at Boston College, leading the Eagles to two Hockey East …

MHS Girls' Track Downs Danvers

Marblehead High School's girls' track team defeated Danvers Monday afternoon.

The following information was provided by girls' track coach Michael Toomey: Final Score: 86-50 Marblehead High School's girls' track team improved to 2-0 on the season Monday afternoon, thanks to a very balanced attack. This meet came down to the final relay a year ago, so I was very happy with the performance today. Highlights: Kelly Roland (High Jump,400 Hurdles); Monica Thorne (Long Jump and Triple Jump) and Mimi Goetz (Javelin, Shot Put) were all double winners. Other winners included Janaya Randall in the 2-mile; Steph Lundgren in the 100 Hurdles; Paige Ferrucci in the 800 meters; and the 4 x 100 team of Kaitlin McCarthy, Cecilia Moran, Cailin Daley, and Mimi Goetz. The girls' will move on to face Lynn English next week.

Local Snowboarder Wins Gold

A local seventh grader was recently awarded gold medals at a national snowboarding competition.

The following information was provided by Jeffrey Morrison: Kelly Morrison, a seventh grade student at Marblehead Veterans Middle School and a member of the Gould Academy Competition Program at Sunday River, Maine, participated in the United States of America Snowboard Association National Championship competition at Copper Mountain, Colo., the week of April 2. Morrison, an active participant in the Maine Mountain Series, attends snowboarding events throughout Maine and competes in Boardercross, Slalom and Giant Slalom. Having qualified for all three events at the national competition last week, Morrison brought home gold medals in her age group (12/13 years) in both Slalom and Giant Slalom.

MHS Girls' Track Crushes Saugus

Marblehead High School's girls' track team breezed past Saugus Wednesday afternoon.

The following information was provided by Marblehead High School's girls' track coach Michael Toomey: Marblehead High School's girls' track team opened up the 2012 season with a convincing 102-29 win over Saugus. "We had a lot of great performances and five qualifying marks for the MIAA state meet later this season," Toomey said in an email. "We have a lot of work to do over the next few weeks and a big meet against Danvers on Monday, but its nice to have the first one under our belt." Event winners: Ferrucci (800), Goetz (100, shot, jav) and Thorne (TJ) all qualified for states.

MHS Girls' Lacrosse Wins Opener

Marblehead High School's girls' varsity lacrosse won their home opener against Pentucket Tuesday.

Information provided by Marblehead High School's girls' varsity lacrosse team head coach Annie Pugh: Marblehead High School's girls' varisty lacrosse team won their season-opener over Pentucket at Piper Field Tuesday afternoon. The girls took a 9-8 lead into halftime and held on to defeat Pentucket 19-15. Game Highlights: Next Game: The girls' varsity team will host Beverly April 10 at 4 p.m.

Special Olympics Swim Team takes Polar Plunge

Local resident Emily Korriku, Associate Aquatics Director for the Lynch/van Otterloo YMCA and Head Swim Coach of the Marblehead/Swampscott Bluefish Special Olympic Swim team participated in the Polar Plunge Fundraiser at Revere Beach for a second time.

Local resident Emily Korriku, Associate Aquatics Director for the Lynch/van Otterloo YMCA and Head Swim Coach of the Marblehead/Swampscott Bluefish Special Olympic Swim team participated in the Polar Plunge Fundraiser at Revere Beach for a second time. To raise money for the team, Korriku plunged into the freezing cold water with her assistant coaches Lindsey Bryant (attending college for Special Education), Ben Madigan-Fried, Mariana McCarthy, committed volunteer Kasey Kennedy, and swim team member Ryan Horrigan. Magicians Win North Shore Championship

Marblehead's 7th Grade Girls basketball team were recently crowned North Shore Travel Basketball League Champions.

The following story was submitted by Derek Norcross: As the final seconds ticked off the clock in the North Shore Girls Travel Basketball League Finals, Nicole Freddo turned and launched a half court 3-pointer that hit nothing but the bottom of the net. It was the exclamation point to a thrilling championship game and the culmination of a near perfect season for the Marblehead 7th grade girls basketball team. Marblehead ended their season with an 18-2 record by defeating arch-rival Ipswich 31-18, in a game that was much closer than the final score. Marblehead entered the NSGTBL tournament as the number one seed after compiling a stellar 15-2 regular season record. Their only regular season losses were to traditional rival Swampscott and to…
