Marblehead High Senior Segues

In these short video clips we ask high school seniors for their post graduation plans and their pre-graduation thoughts.

Welcome to our latest "Senior Segue". Here we visit briefly with Marblehead High 12th-graders. They still have a big month left in their public schools days but are on the cusp of graduating and preparing to transition to what's next in their lives. Many will be packing for colleges, some of them out of state. Some will head into the military. Others may go right into the work force. Some may even spend time traveling. These are short clips in which seniors say what they plan to do next year: what they will miss about Marblehead High: and what they are looking forward to? Let us know if you would like us to video your segue. Send an email to marblehead@patch.com and we'll arrange one with you.

North Shore Graduations Step Up Security

After last month's Boston Marathon bombing, school officials aren't taking any chances.

North Shore colleges and high schools will increase security for graduation ceremonies due to the Boston Marathon bombing, the Salem News is reporting. Many schools, like Salem State University and Gordon College, will have bag searches and increased number of security personnel. On April 15, two bombs were detonated at the Boston Marathon, killing three people and injuring more than 170 others. Since then, security has been a concern at large events in the Boston area. "There will be a lot of eyes around. We will all be aware and watching what will be going on around us," Joanne Waldner, assistant to the president at Endicott College, told the Salem News. How Does Marblehead High School Rank? Depends on Whom You Ask

Newsweek magazine's 2013 rankings of best U.S. high schools came out Monday. Marblehead High wasn't on that list, but it is on others.

On mobile? You can see interactive map here. Newsweek has ranked the top high schools in the U.S. — And while Marblehead High isn't on the list, that might not mean much. For its rankings, Newsweek sent out a survey to more than 5,000 high schools in the U.S., with about 2,500 schools responding in 2013. Marblehead Patch reached out to the district's superintendent to see if the town responded to the survey, but we haven't heard back from him. Marblehead High also didn't appear on a similar U.S. News and World Report survey. But last year Boston Magazine honored Marblehead High as the 21st-best high school in Boston or the Boston suburbs. You can see the details from the Newsweek survey about nearby ranked high schools by clicking on the …

Bell Breaks Ground on a Garden For Learning

Organizers and administrators thanked local contractors for their help at the ceremony Thursday.

Work on the Bell School Organic Garden started earlier this month, well before Thursday's groundbreaking ceremony. But the ceremony at the K-3 Bell School gave organizers and administrators a chance to thank the contractors and parents who have volunteered to make the school inside/outside learning project a reality. The school's 370 or so students will see a new 100-foot corridor stripped of asphalt and cleared of brush, and a pizza garden and patio. It will be a place for children to grow as they study and play. Art, music, biology, math, geometry, literature and history are just some of the subjects the garden area will serve. The peaceful place is ideal for small concerts and sketching, for gathering and charting data, for reading …

Meanwhile, over in Marblehead on the baseball diamond, Swampscott's Trevor Massey went the distance pitching the Big Blue to a 1-0 victory. Swampscott Coach Jason Calichman said it was an exciting and well played game. Corey Carmody delivered a clutch two-out single in the sixth to push across the game winner for Swampscott, the team's second victory of the season. The Swampscott baseball and softball teams are back in action Wednesday against Beverly, the girls playing on the road at 4 p.m. and the boys playing at home at 4:30 p.m. The Magicians …

Johnny Pesky Remembered with Salem State Pole

Saturday's ceremonies included a moment of silence for Salem State graduate Sean Collier, killed while working as an MIT police officer.

Silence, song and baseball brought family, friends and fans together Saturday at Salem State University to celebrate and remember. They celebrated Red Sox legend Johnny Pesky, a Salem State honorary degree recipient and Swampscott resident who died last summer at age 92. They remembered Sean Collier, a 2009 Salem State University  criminal justice graduate, and victims of the Boston Marathon bombings.  Sean, 26, was a Massachusetts Institute of Technology police officer shot and killed Thursday night in his vehicle near Vassar and Main Street in Cambridge. Saturday's ceremonies came after days of violence and uncertainty in the region. The ceremonies took place on a perfect red and green infield at the university’s baseball field, tucked…

Should the Entire School Committee Resign?

That's the suggestion chairman EuRim Chun made on Thursday.

Is the chairman of the School Committee right that the whole board should just resign and let voters chose a new set of representatives? That was the pitch EuRim Chun made Thursday as Marblehead's education system continues to roil. Last month, Superintendent Greg Maass announced he would resign. Maass cited his fractured relationship with a dysfunctional school board as his reason for moving on. Marblehead is in the position of having to hire a sixth new superintendent since 2005. Many point fingers at a fractious School Committee as the source of the inability to retain school leaders. Here's some Marbleheaders are reacting to Chun's call for mass resignations: Sandy Lane Cross wrote on the Marblehead Patch Facebook page, "It takes a lot…

Hey Toby, are you aware that Marblehead does not have a Town Manager nor does it have a Mayor? It has a Board of Selectmen which direct the Town Administrator (who has no independent power). In addition, every single member of the current School Committee has an advanced degree in areas from Science to Public Policy. Do your homework. Finally, Education Schools in America are the primary reason …   more ›
