Dupper you do understand that 4% off a register receipt is NO where near 5% profit of 4 BillionRead More right? MB netted 5 Billion in 2013..but anywasy... 5% of 4 or 5 Billion is $200-250 MILION!!!! That is insane(ly awesome) for a grocery store! If I buy a box of cereal at wholsesale for $1, sell it for $4, then knock off 4% (roughly 16 cents) I am still taking in $2.84. The 4% discount is not only a drop in the bucket to MB, a thank you to customers, it was ultimately Arthur S' decision since he has control of the board, not Arthur T's! Ha good try though. I goto Donelan's in the meantime...
Dupper617 July 24, 2014 at 04:08 pm
Joseph- If you are buying a box of cereal for $1 and selling it for $4 then you are making more thanRead More 5% profit. The profit was $217 million for combined 71 stores which about 3 million per store. It was for 2012 not 2013 -link attached. Market Basket has the smallest market share and sales volume compared to Stop n Shop, Shaw's, and Hannaford. I agree that it is a great profit for a select few and profit sharing with the employees is part of the draw to work there. The problem is once an owner becomes content the company will deteriorate. Artie T. is great for market basket because he has a great team and strategy. I also understand why Artie S. wants to increase profits. I think the worst thing he did was bring in inept co-CEOs. Hopefully Friday will put an end to all of this so the employees and distributors can make money and not end up jobless and on welfare.

You are so right--we just got back from another store--it was horrible--not as muchRead More selection--higher prices--no fresh seafood. I hope the fools who are money-hungry sell to Arthur T really quick.

Humanity has no room for vile scum like this young man. Every Massachusetts resident with a heartRead More and a conscience should be ashamed that they allow this state to coddle its most heinous criminals. Apparently goats don't react to poison ivy. If they do this is a very bad idea.
Bryant Hopkins July 24, 2014 at 10:06 am
Goats LOVE poison ivy! They chew the stuff all day long, then later on leave "fertilizer"Read More behind so that more desirable plants can grow where the poison ivy grew. It is great for the goats and for those of us (roughly 1 in 7 people) who are extra sensitive to the "leaves of three". Just don't pet goats working over a poison ivy patch, as the urushiol oils (the "poison" in poison ivy) that come in contact with the goats will not harm the goats but will get onto whomever comes in contact with the goats. Sadly, poison ivy is one plant that will benefit from climate change in the coming years, so here one issue that tree huggers and climate change deniers who hate poison ivy can agree upon - WE NEED MORE GOATS!

Chelmsford should rent some goats to take care of invasive plants growing up the telephone poles andRead More around the fire hydrants. Concord has used goats very successfully. There is a lot of inch by inch plants in Chelmsford. Chop the plant close to roots and pour a couple drops of vinegar. Pull down the rest of vine.

I went to MB every so often, now only the Walpole Walmart. It's brand new, clean, and in expensive!
R. Scott White July 24, 2014 at 01:54 pm
This week instead of going to MB I went to four places: Target, Cumberland Farms, Trader Joe's, andRead More Hannaford. That's what you have to do to find the lower prices that Market Basket offers all by itself. Wondering if it was worth the gas.

I would shop at Hannaford. I hate Shaw's and will not go there.

I became a blood donor by accident. I was called for jury duty last year. As you know you have toRead More sit around and wait for your name to be called for a trial. While we were all waiting the jury attendant entered the room and announced that the mobile blood center just arrived. He said, " If you donate we will look very favorable upon you." I bolted out of my chair, ran down 4 flights of stairs , and got in line. My thinking was anything is better than sitting around another day waiting to be called for a trial. I was amazed at how fast and easy it was to donate blood. AND the jury attendant released me from jury duty for the next 3 years!! I've been donating blood every two months since that wonderful day I was released from jury duty...

The thousands of people who showed up in protest are hard working employees and customers who wereRead More treated with honor and respect by Arthur. When employees were down, he picked them up and would treat his customers like he did his employees. Did not know the man, but from listening to interviews of employees old and young, he sounds like an "AWSOME" leader!! Good luck to all!!

Rick July 22, 2014 at 11:08 pm
Numerous "business" reporters are predicting that MB will be sold to some "hedgeRead More fund", who could care less about the customers or the employees. The hedge investors will milk it the business for all they can and then sell a few locations and close all the others. This is the Bain Capital model. You know, Bain Capital of Mitt Romney fame.
Tewksbury2001 July 23, 2014 at 06:05 am
@Rick- I think they need all the shareholders to approve that sale and I don't see that happening. IRead More think Artie S underestimated the impact of this, however he obviously knew enough to not name himself CEO but rather two outsiders that can take the media hit on this. If I were the two CEO's I would resign. They can't recover from this. Perhaps Artie T should have just put in a recurring dividend payment to shareholders to provide them with some liquidity and maybe that would have kept. them happy and he could continue to run the business.
