The Marblehead Police Department was organized in 1853, making it one of the oldest police departments in the United States. Robert O. Picariello serves as the police chief. Officers are on duty 24 hours a day.
The department include an animal control division and participates in the North Shore drug and anti-crime task force, a weapons and ammunition disposal program and the North East Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council (NEMLEC).
