The sea wore many faces in the Sperry Top-Sider Nood Regatta, known locally as Marblehead Race Week.
And the varying conditions are a signature of the Marblehead regatta, which takes place over four days each summer, said Ben Richardson, winner of the coveted spittoon trophy.
Ben took first place in the Rhodes 19 Class.
To start off, the first two days, it was breezy but by Sunday the wind had waned and seas were choppy, said sailors gathered under the big-top tent at the Boston Yacht Club.
Several hundred sailors and their families and friends were together for the sailing awards late Sunday afternoon.
Among the locals to haul away awards were Patrick Andreasen and Fred deNapoli and Kim Barrows. Their boat, allegro, came in second in the J/105 Class.
Fred said they were  sailing with their A team this year, which felt good.
Marblehead sailors Debra Kekar and Richard Boardman, on the Valkyrie with Don Miller were joined by Lesli Mead of Marblehead, who sailed on the Grace Under Fire.
Several of them noted the range of sailing conditions, from spectacular to crappy, but the gang was happy to be together.
That's what they all look forward to at race week, said Lesli, the sailing together and being together.
"You are all connected," she said. "All part of this. That is what makes it."
The sailor to come away with the Norm Cressy Award, named after the local sailing legend, was Skip Shumway of Rochester, NY.
The Marblehead sailing races started in 1889 making it one of the oldest if not the oldest sailing regatta in the country.
It's also the most family friendly of the five other regatta in the series, St. Petersburg, Fla., San Diego, Annapolis, Maryland, Seattle and Chicago, said George Brengle, marketing director for Sailing World.
The first half of the week was Junior Marblehead Race Week, featuring racers under 21 years old.
The senior Marblehead regatta drew 1,000 sailors and 159 boats in 11 classes.
The junior races drew almost twice as many boats as the senior circuit.
