The Greening of Piper Field

The crew foreman expects the work to be finished by Saturday, Sept. 7, so long as the weather cooperates.

In three days Piper Field went from gray to green.

Workers with the Georgia company SPRINTURF started the job Monday.

Since then the SPRINTURF team unrolled green artificial turf over the gray base and stitched the turf in place, said project foreman Timucin Karca.

On Thursday, Timucin and crew members were inlaying lines, five different colors  — white, red, orange, yellow and blue — on the multi-purpose field.

After inlaying comes infilling of cryogenic rubber pellets to make the grass blades stand up.

If weather cooperates Timucin expects the field to be ready for play by Saturday, Sept. 7.

On Thursday, Sept. 12, the school will hold a formal rededication ceremony, said Marblehead School Athletic Director Mark Tarmey.

Sept. 12, will also see Marblehead High athletes running and tackling on the turf: a varsity soccer game vs. Swampscott in the afternoon; and a varsity football game vs. Lynn Classical at night.

The field will host lots of games — varsity football, field hockey, boys and girls soccer and boys and girls lacrosse games.

There will be 80 high school contests in the fall and 80 high school contests in the spring, the athletic director said. And there will be 12 night contests this year.

In addition it will host youth football, soccer, lacrosse and flag football games.
