Marblehead Rolls to 41-0 Win Over Salem

The win at Piper Field pushed Marblehead to 3-0 on the season.

Marblehead football controlled play from start to finish Friday night at Piper Field downing the Salem Witches 41-0.

Along the way Marblehead controlled the trenches, preventing Salem from mounting much offense.

On the other side of the ball, Marblehead's running backs including Brooks Tyrrell ripped off consistent yardage.

Quarterback Matt Millen made clean throws including a 50-yard completion and a 25-yard touchdown en route to the win. He also ran the ball when Salem's D keyed on the tailback.

Going into the game, Coach Jim Rudloff wanted more players to contribute to the game effort.

After the game the coach said he was pleased with the additional contributions.

Mark Cohen, Casen Sullivan and Teddy Camp all chipped in, giving the team more depth.

"We have a couple more bullets in our arsenal," the coach said.

The coach came away from the game with two primary thoughts.

One: the team has to clean up the penalties. They were a problem in a previous game and were still a problem against Salem.

Two: the team shifted into fifth gear in the second half.

Last week the team came out flat in the second half against Lynn Classical.

This week the team poured on the effort in the second half.

"This week we took a giant step forward," the coach said.

The coach also expects the opponent, Salem (0-2), will make strides this season, going on to win football games.

The win pushed the Magicians record to 3-0.

Marblehead travels to Swampscott (1-2) for its next game.

Swampscott defeated Winthrop 28-14 at Winthrop on Friday night.
