The field was recently resurfaced with artificial turf, and on Thursday the Marblehead varsity football team played its first game on the field.
Christopher Piper was a captain on the 1979 Marblehead High football team.
He died June 16, 2005, as a result of injuries from a roadside bomb in Afghanistan.
