Following the interim business manager's resignation last week the superintendent, helped by an experienced staff, assumed the district's financial responsibilities.
Superintendent Greg Maass said on Friday that he hoped to have a short-term interim replacement in the post some time this week.
Then a School Committee search panel would seek candidates for a regular business manager.
The superintendent said he has been doing his job long enough to know how to fulfill purchasing and other business responsibilities until an interim replacement is found.
Kevin Meagher, the former interim business manager, resigned after his arrest Jan. 21 for allegedly driving drunk and carrying a loaded .38. He was licensed to carry a gun. It is illegal to carry one while intoxicated.
Meagher, 47, of Saugus was hired as interim business manager for Marblehead schools before the start of the 2011 school year.
The superintendent said Meagher was good at his job and dedicated.
"He’s great — a really good employee," the superintendent said. "He was at work every day. More times than not he was the last perosn in the office, and he was likable."
