Marblehead Powderpuff Girls Edged in Overtime 28-26

The Marblehead senior girls played with determination and lost with dignity Saturday in a memorable 28-26 powderpuff game against Swampscott at Blocksidge Field.

Thousands of fans witnessed the dramatic flag football game decided in the second overtime after Swampscott stopped a 2-point conversion attempt by the Magicians.

Marblehead jumped to a 7-0 lead on a running touchdown and went up 14-7 in the 4th quarter on a long touchdown run up the middle by Monica Thorne.

The Marblehead offense was paced by strong runs. On several of these the Magicians' runners were stopped by lone Swampscott defenders whose flag grabs prevented touchdowns.

After the game, the Marblehead girls made a circle of togetherness and, swaying to one side then the other, sang.

This after shaking hands with Swampscott.
