Essex County Sheriff Frank Cousins holds a hot dog buffet with Marblehead residents at the Gerry 5 VFA Hall.

Essex County Sheriff Frank Cousins held a fundraising event at the Gerry VFA Hall Thursday evening, sharing hot dogs and beans and chili with Marblehead voters ahead of the November 2 general election.

Cousins is running as a Republican for his third term as Essex County sheriff. He was appointed by Gov. Bill Weld in 1996, and won re-election in 1998 and 2004.

He said he has recently visited Salem and Peabody and plans to campaign in Beverly and Lynn in the upcoming weeks.

In an interview with Marblehead Patch, Cousins said he believes in progressive reform of the county corrections under his charge, including the Middleton jail, "The farm" in Lawrence, and a women's house of correction in Salisbury.

He talked about his reform record in reducing the budget and working to help prisoners pass a GED test.

On campaigning, Cousins said he has a constituency in all 34 cities and towns in Essex County.

"I'm doing it all the time, going out to see people all the time," he said.

Amy Carnevale, chairwoman of the Marblehead Republican Town Committee, introduced Cousins to the gathering of local residents, supporters and their families.

Missey Donohoe, a Marblehead resident and Cousins' assistant director of Human Resources at the Essex County Sheriff's department, organized the event.
