Restored Water Service Expected on The Neck

Water and Sewer Department crews spent Friday chasing down and repairing a break in a 10-inch cast-iron main.

Water service was expected to be restored to 11 homes on The Neck by Saturday morning after a water line broke early Friday.

The homes are by Harbor Avenue and Foster Street.

As of 6:15 p.m. Friday, Marblehead Water and Sewer Department workers had found the break in a 10-inch cast-iron water main, cut out the broken section and replaced it, said Water and Sewer Superintendent Amy McHugh.

The crew was charging the line, and testing for water leaks.

The superintendent said workers would remain at the work site until service was restored, which she expected soon.

The break was reported about 4:30 a.m., Friday.

Water was seeping through the pavement, department Assistant Superintendent Brad Perron said earlier.

Water service to the 11 residences was interrupted once repair work started.

The cast-iron water main was installed in the 1950s but later had been cleaned and relined, the superintendent said.

The reason for the break had yet to be determined as of early evening Friday, the superintendent said.
