Local Man Joins National Committee

Robert Green, of Marblehead, recently joined the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare.

The following press release was issued by Christopher Chase:

A local man has joined The National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare (NCPSSM), one of the nation’s most influential seniors’ advocacy organizations with over 304,000 members and supporters in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and New York.

In an announcement made Wednesday, Robert Green, of Marblehead, joined the committee, which recently launched a seven-figure national campaign to stop threatened cuts to three of the nation’s most valued income security and health insurance programs; Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.

Known as the “HANDS OFF-NO CUTS” campaign, activities will be focused on Members of Congress and the 12-member Deficit Reduction Super Committee and will include local and national radio and TV advertising, town halls, social media, petition drives, phone campaigns, and local or regional events.

Green will be joined by Patricia Moss, a resident of Springfield, on the HANDS OFF-NO CUTS campaign as Volunteer Leaders to help bring the message to Massachusetts voters by organizing local activities designed to call attention to the Super Committee and members of Congress who would support cuts to Social Security, Medicare or Medicaid as part of any deficit reduction plan.

Both Green and Moss recently completed an intensive four-day training held at the National Committee’s headquarters in Washington, D.C.

“During these hard economic times there should be no cuts in Social Security, Medicare or Medicaid, as these programs are essential for our economic recovery and for our nation’s seniors,” Green said. “Workers and their employers paid for our Social Security insurance and it should be kept safe for them.”

Green and Moss will be working with political veteran, Natasha Perez who has been selected to lead the efforts in the Northeastern states. Together, Perez, Green and Moss will work to ensure that Senators Kerry (D-MA) and Brown (R-MA) and Representatives Bass (R-NH), Hayworth (R-NY) and Buerkle (R-NY) hear from the voters who are opposed to cutting American’s safety net.

“I joined this campaign because I believe that this is an issue that affects all Americans,” Moss said. “Whether you are young, middle-aged, or elderly, Social Security and Medicare should be there when you most need it. Those who propose to cute or eliminate these programs don’t understand the human tragedy that would result from their actions.”

A recent bipartisan poll commissioned by the National Committee shows an overwhelming majority of Americans of all political stripes – 70% – are against cuts to Social Security and Medicare as part of any deficit reduction. The poll also showed that the majority of people said they would not support their Member of Congress for voting in favor of cuts.
