Backyard Chicken Coops Approved

The Board of Health unanimously approved requests for two backyard chicken coops Wednesday night.

At a Board of Health meeting Wednesday night, Diana Ohlson joked that the only problem she ran into when asking her neighbors for permission to maintain a backyard chicken coop was their sudden interest in free eggs.

Ohlson was the happy recipient of one of two fowl permits issued by the board at their meeting in the lower-level conference room of the on Widger Road.

The board unanimously approved a fowl permit allowing for six speckled sussex chickens to Ohlson and her husband, Eric, of 14 Dunn's Lane.

"We're excited to get going," Diana Ohlson said prior to the board's vote, stressing the request was for female chickens only, and that there would be no "cock-a-doodling" in her neighborhood.

Also receiving a fowl permit Wednesday night was Lauren Lautner, of 19 West St., who said she planned on maintaining a roost of mixed female chicken breeds, including 'Easter Eggers.'

Lautner told board members she was inheriting an existing backyard coop on West Street that was being left behind by a local family that is moving to Switzerland.
