Downtown Drainage Work Continues Beyond Dec. 1 Cut-Off

Catch basin and clean-up work remains before crews shut down for the winter.

Phase 1 of downtown drainage construction continues this week while crews install a catch basin near the Marblehead Chamber of Commerce information booth on Pleasant Street.

Next week the contractor will pave and remove equipment at the site, said Amy McHugh, superintendent of the Marblehead Water and Sewer Department.

The season was extended beyond the typical Dec. 1 cut-off so the catch basin installation could be completed, the superintendent said.

The superintendent said about 85 percent of Phase 1 work is complete. Crews were slowed when they hit ledge at Bassett Street and Pleasant Street.

Work will resume in spring, continuing on Pleasant Street to Spring Street and Evans Road.

The starting date is dependent upon the weather.

The contractor is J.P. Cardillo & Sons of Wakefield.

The $4.9 million Pleasant Street drainage project is projected to take three years.

Phase I, $2.9 million, boosts drainage capacity out of Pleasant Street. Phase II, $.8 million, improves drainage capacity near Pleasant Street. Phase III, $1.2 million, relieves drainage restrictions at Evans, Roosevelt and Curtis.

The project will relieve flooding and pooling and upgrade old infrastructure.
