Would You Support Shop Local Signs? (POLL)

Would you support hanging these signs around town? The idea was endorsed by the Board of Selectmen Wednesday night.

A representative appeared before the Board of Selectmen Wednesday night to ask for guidance in forwarding the organization's mission to post "Keep it Local, Shop Marblehead" signs around town.

Prior to his presentation, Gene Arnold, a member of the chamber's Board of Directors, presented the Selectmen with "Keep it Local" pins and said he was on-hand simply to be "pointed in the right direction."

"There are those that think that Marblehead is inundated with tourists in the summertime and that just aint so," Arnold said, stressing that return business from local residents is the lifeblood of the local business community.

"We're looking to place several of these signs on existing sign posts around town so that people will be reminded of their important role in keeping local shops alive," Arnold said.

Although he presented board members with a prototype "Keep it Local" sign Wednesday night, Arnold admitted that the size, shape and material it was made out of would likely have to be changed.

"I think we should do something to support this because anyone who walks around town will notice the closings," Selectman Judie Jacobi said. "I always feel a little guilty when I go under the banner on the way out of town."

The Selectmen unanimously passed a motion to "support the concept" and suggested Arnold contact Town Counsel Lisa Mead and the Historical Council about existing sign bylaws.
