CLOCK TOWER: Repairs to Start Early and End Late This Year

The work will include lots of small repairs, including those to cracks in spots throughout the tower.

Bids on the Abbot Hall clock tower restoration project go out this month, come in next month and will be awarded by March 14.

Eight months later repairs to the historic tower will be done — Nov. 14 — if the project goes as planned.

Architect Wendall Kalsow, of McGinley Kalsow Associates, and John Wathne of Structures North Consulting Engineers reviewed the project timeline and repairs with selectmen on Wednesday.

The town previously approved spending up to $2.46 million for the project to repair the deteriorating, 138-year-old Abbot Hall clock tower.

The restoration project will include marble, brick, sandstone, window, column, arch and clock face repairs, as well as building access work.

At the bottom of this article is a downloadable restoration project repair list.

The tower's four clock faces will be removed and restored off-site.

Staging for the job will be stored on the west side of the building, perpendicular to Washington Street.

All means of egress will remain.
