Updated: Driver Given Criminal Citation in Taft Street Accident

Updated: Friday, Jan. 24

Police issued a criminal citation to the driver of the vehicle involved in Thursday's accident on Taft Street.

The driver was a juvenile male, 17, from Marblehead and was cited for negligent operation and driving without a license, police said. The driver was not identified because of his age.

Original post:

An SUV struck a fire hydrant and rammed the back of a vehicle parked in a Taft Street driveway today, Jan 23, about 12:30.

Witnesses said water gushed six feet in the air from the hydrant before fire crews tended to the broken yellow hydrant.

Fire, police and water department personnel were on the scene at 15 Taft Road, a residential street about a half-mile from West Shore Drive.

The water department turned off a gate to the hydrant, minimizing the flooding.

Police tended to traffic and were investigating the incident.

A highway department truck stood by with a load of salt and sand to treat the icy street once crews cleared the scene.
