Selectmen approved Marblehead Police Officer David Ostrovitz's promotion to lieutenant at their meeting Wednesday night.

The promotion takes effect Jan. 26.

Ostrovitz has been an officer in town for more than 14 years. He thanked the board for their approval and the police chief for recommending him for the position.

He said he looks forward to continuing his journey with the department. Family including his parents were in the audience at the Town Hall meeting.

Marblehead Police Chief Robert Picariello recommended the veteran officer for the lieutenant position, saying his record is unblemished and he will be an asset.

The Selectmen's recent appointment of three new officers — one has already been sworn in — gives the department the flexibility to fill the lieutenant position, the police chief said.

Two appointments, those of Christopher Donahue and Michael Maccario, are subject to completion of police academy training, field training and a probationary period.

The third appointment is Neil Comeau, an academy trained and experienced officer.

The officers will fill postions left vacant after retirements, promotions and transfers in recent years.
