Peabody police are investigating a stabbing that occurred at a Route 1 hotel early Wednesday morning.

Detective Michael Crane said officers were called to Homewood Suites around 1:10 a.m. on a report of a stabbing and found a 37-year-old Beverly man in the lobby of the building.

The man had a visible stab wound to his chest and was semi-conscious, Crane said. The victim was taken to Mass. General Hospital in Boston by ambulance and was later conscious and alert enough to speak with officers.

"The incident does not appear to be random," Crane said, adding that police believe the suspect and victim know each other. At this time, there is just a single male suspect.

Crane said the  victim told officers he was staying at the hotel.

Officers at the scene did see a white vehicle leave the hotel lot and began searching for it along the highway, Crane said.

According to scanner reports, a state police K-9 unit was also on-scene and cruisers searched the northbound side of the highway in the area of the Jughandle.

The hotel is just down the road from the turnaround.

At one point, units were asked to stop a white Lincoln Town Car with Maine license plates that was wanted in connection to the incident at the hotel.

According to scanner reports, police believed the car was occupied by a male and possibly a female.
