Only Police Allowed to Carry Guns at Schools

The former interim business manager, Kevin Meagher, did not carry a gun in schools. The district's policy on weapons adheres to state law.

The school district's former business manager had a license to carry a gun but did not do so at school property.

Kevin Meagher, 47, of Saugus resigned last week as the interim business manager for the Marblehead district after his arraignment on charges including operating under the influence (second offense) and being a licensee carrying a loaded weapon while intoxicated.

Marblehead Superintendent Greg Maass said in an interview Friday that Meagher, like other school employees, was not allowed to carry a gun at school.

"He never had a gun (at school)," the superintendent said.

The Marblehead School District's policy on guns subscribes to a state statute, Chapter 269, Section 10.

Subsection J of that statute prohibits anyone but police officers from carrying a weapon at an elementary school, secondary school, college or university unless the person has the written authorization of the board or officer in charge of the school.

Meagher was arrested in the early evening last Monday, a school holiday for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Yeah right. He didn't have a gun in school. What was a Saugus resident doing in Marblehead with a gun. Right, he left it in the glove compartment while he went into retrieve the holster. He was on school property with a gun.

Maybe he did not want to be the next "statistic" when some mentally ill (and they all are) person came into the Mary Alley building looking for the school administration. Now if your issue is a man with an alleged drinking problem should not have a gun then that is a different story, but there is no evidence of alcohol and this man together at the school. As one of the radio hosts says; "When seconds count, the police are just minutes away."

True, perhaps he didn't want to be a statistic, however, he was arrested on a holiday. There was no school and administrators had the day off too. Again, what is he doing in Marblehead with a gun he is licensed to have in Saugus?

He is not only licenses to have it in Saugus. Look up the laws. He obtained the license there, but it is good anywhere in the state of Massachusetts
