Marblehead Police Department Equipped with Electric Mountain Bikes

MPD will test and evaluate the bikes, provided by Polaris eBikes, this summer.

The Marblehead Police Department has announced that they will be test riding and evaluating electric mountain bikes this summer.

The Lithium battery powered bikes have been loaned by Polaris eBikes, a Marblehead based company. Essentially, the bikes are regular mountain bikes with an electric power assist installed that can propel riders up to 20 miles an hour for about 30 miles before needing a recharge. The bikes are also equipped with a mini-computer on the handlebars that keeps track of speed, battery life, and miles pedaled.

The electric motor makes for a silent and smooth ride, perfect for Marblehead’s steep inclines. The motor can be turned off by the officer for a conventional mountain bike ride.

Chief Robert Picariello and the bike officers “are excited to see if it helps the response time and functionality with regard to emergency calls”.

They are also very grateful that the business chose their department to test the bikes, saying “it’s a great feeling of small-town community spirit”.
