Police: Marblehead High School Student Charged With 'Yik Yak' Bomb Threat

A juvenile student at Marblehead High School has been linked to a bomb threat posted on the "anonymous" smartphone app 'Yik Yak'.

It turns out the anonymous smartphone app 'Yik Yak', which has been making headlines in Marblehead, isn't so anonymous after all.

The Marblehead Police Department announced Thursday that a juvenile Marblehead High School student will face charges in connection with a bomb threat that prompted an evacuation at the school earlier this month

On Tuesday, March 4, school officials were alerted to a threat posted on the new smartphone app, which does not require users to create a username and allows anyone to post "anonymous" messages for people within a ten mile radius to view.

In the days following the threat, Marblehead High School students were prohibited from carrying backpacks or using personal electronic devices.

Although the ban on backpacks has since been lifted, cell phones and other electronics are still prohibited.

According to the release issued by police, Marblehead detectives worked with school officials and the developers of the app to identify their suspect.

The unidentified student will be arraigned in Lynn Juvenile Court on charges of placing a bomb threat and disrupting of a school assembly.

A second threat posted to Yik Yak later in the day on March 4 also prompted an evacuation. That threat is still under investigation, according to police.

Marblehead Patch will post additional information as it becomes available.
