Diver Who Died Tuesday Identified

The diver that did not resurface while diving for scallops on Tuesday morning off the Marblehead coast has been identified.

The 58-year-old man who died while diving off the Marblehead coast on Tuesday has been identified as Gregory Cole of Westfield.

Investigators said Cole was with two other men, SCUBA diving for scallops near Satan’s Rock, when he did not surface. The Essex County District Attorney’s office said Cole died of an “apparent drowning” about two miles off of Marblehead Harbor.

Foul play is not suspected, said Carrie Kimball-Monahan, spokeswoman for Essex County District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett.

Emergency responders were first called at about 10:15 a.m. by the driver of the boat the Cole was diving from. Cole did not surface after a dive and the boat driver called in a “diver down” to the Marblehead Harbormaster, Kimball-Monahan said.

The Marblehead Harbormaster and police responded at first, later assisted by teams Beverly, Salem, Environmental Police, State Police and the U.S. Coast Guard.
