Crane Operator Flown to Boston After Fall

The fall victim was conscious but not alert.

A crane operator who fell and hit his head while preparing to move a boat to a trailer by Redds Pond was flown to Tufts Medical Center in Boston this afternoon.

The unidentified man was conscious but not alert after the fall, said Marblehead Fire Lt. Thomas Rice.

About 3 p.m. a passerby in a car witnessed the man fall and hit his head, the fire lieutenant said. It is unknown what the man hit his head upon.

The passerby went into Redds Pond Boatworks to report what he saw and an employee called 911, the fire lieutenant said.

Marblehead police and fire units responded to the scene. Atlantic Ambulance also responded.

Personnel with the ambulance company thought it best that the man be flown to Boston for treatment of the injury.

The crane operator was getting ready to place the boat on a trailer at the time of the incident, the fire officer said.

The helicopter took off from Reynolds Playground. Here is video of the take-off.
