Obituary: Evelyn S. Baker, Avid Golfer and Volunteer

Evelyn Baker, May 23, 1933 - January 7, 2014, was a member of the Tedesco Country Club and the Gut'n Feathers Badminton Club.

Evelyn Ann Suutari Baker, 80, of Marblehead, died peacefully in her home surrounded by friends and family on Tuesday, January 7, 2014 after a courageous battle with amyloidosis.

Mrs. Baker was born and grew up in Rockport, MA, daughter of the late Mr. & Mrs. John V. Suutari. She graduated from Gloucester High School in 1951 and then from UNH in 1955. She married Dr. Robert E. Baker in 1955 and had a wonderful 52 years of marriage until his death in 2008.

She was an active community member and volunteer as a Girl Scout Leader, the Local Girls Club, Junior Aid Society and many other organizations. She was very involved with her alma mater, UNH, as class secretary.

She loved to be outdoors and was an avid golfer and an inspiration to all on the course. She was a member of Tedesco Country Club as well as the Gut 'n Feathers Badminton Club.

She was predeceased by her husband, Dr. Robert Baker. She leaves a son, Kit of Rockport; a daughter, Laurie Baker of Avon, CO; a daughter and son-in-law, Leslie Baker-Brown and Cameron Brown of Norwich, VT; and a brother and sister-in-law, Peter and Yvonne Suutari of Boynton Beach, Fla. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Whitney and Eric Wertz and Robbie and Andrew Brown; a nephew, Ben Suutari; a niece, Betsy Baker Salas and nephew Steve Baker, other nieces and nephews; an aunt, Helvi Carter and many close friends including Dr. James & Carol Rice and Lynnette Cash. 
She was predeceased by brother and sister-in-law, Wain and Phyl Baker and sister-in-law Cynthia Metcalfe.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, Jan. 13th at 1 p.m. at the Old North Church, 35 Washington St., Marblehead, MA. In lieu of flowers and in memory of Evelyn Baker, donations may be made to the Lupus Foundation of America. Arrangements by the Eustis and Cornell Funeral Home, Marblehead.
