William 'Esso' Haines was a big supporter of Marblehead sports for years and now the community is remembering him following his passing recently, according to an article in the Daily Item. He was 82, according to his obituary from Murphy Funeral Home.

Haines was the reason for many Marblehead sports events such as the football banquet, football senior night, the Old-Timers Night.

"Aside from his family, the third thing he loved was football, the second was Marblehead, and the first was Marblehead football," said Marblehead High athletic director Mark Tarmey. "He was so proud to be a Marbleheader, to have played here, to be part of the community. He was a major, major influence on Marblehead football."

Haines is survived by his wife Nancy, whom he had always said was his "best friend."
