Funeral: Lenore Brooks, Artist Who Worked on Popeye and Betty Boop Cartoons

Lenore Brooks, beloved daughter, sister, wife and mother, passed away peacefully on the morning of New Year's Day, 2014. Born in Slutsk, Belorussia on May 17, 1926, she emigrated to New York City in 1929 where she lived with her mother Tatiana, her stepfather Julius Epstein, and her sister Annette until her marriage to Arnold Brooks in 1948.

After graduating from Cooper Union College, she was employed as an artist for Famous Studios where she worked on, among others, the Popeye and Betty Boop cartoons. After Arnold's graduate schooling at Princeton University, the family settled in Swampscott in 1956. While raising their four children, Lenore worked for local political causes, helped recent immigrants from Russia settle in the area, and continued her education as an artist, frequently exhibiting her work at the annual Marblehead Arts Festival.

Throughout her life Lenore pursued sports in all seasons: skiing in New England, playing tennis on the North Shore, and golfing in Florida. Her intellectual, cultural, and social pursuits included opera, reading avidly, family visits to New York, travel to Europe, and diverse activities with her large circle of friends.

Predeceasing Lenore are her parents Julius and Tatiana, Tatiana's brother Nelson Chipchin and his wife Lynn. Survivors include her husband Arnold, with whom she shared 72 happy years; her sister Annette Epstein Dumbach and Annette's husband Otto of Munich, Germany; her four sons George, Peter and his wife Margot, David and Matthew; her three grandchildren Sarah, Adam and Kate; and her cousins Anne Chipchin Paone, Carole Chipchin Schulman and her husband Alan, and Judith Chipchin. Lenore's love, inspiration, and vitality were treasured by all.
