An Ode to Headlight by Grace Perry

Outgoing Editor-in-Chief Grace Perry reflects on her time in high school and, in particular, her time in Headlight.

If today were your last day on this earth, what memories would flash upon your eyes in your final moments? What would you cherish the most? If today was my last day upon this earth there are thousands of memories that I would see. Most, if not all, would be from my high school career. Four years may seem like a lot of time. But when I look back upon them, it feels like they happened in a blink of an eye. It’s funny what high school boils down to. When I am old and raison-y, I won’t remember the endless reading, writing or studying. I’ll remember the fun of high school. The successes and the triumphs. The moments where I felt most alive. For me, high school was a time in my life where I truly found myself. I found a passion for both film and writing. I am so proud of all it is that I have accomplished.

One of those accomplishments being the success of Headlight. Headlight is something I will forever be grateful to have joined. It molded me into a leader, a writer and a better individual.  Being co-Editor in Chief with a fellow redhead, Dan Rosenberg, was also a blessing. We were able to work together to bring Headlight to a completely new level. I am sad to leave it behind as I move forward into the next stage of my life. But, with that said, Dan and I know that we have left it in good hands. Three new editors will continue to make Headlight as great as it possibly can be.

Liam Reilly, one of our three new editors, has been Entertainment Editor for the past two years. He has a great eye for entertainment. He is ambitious, intelligent and creative. I know he will do great things for Headlight and will bring forth a lot to the table. His writing is unique and hilarious. I cannot wait to see what is in store for him as a senior. Meredith Piela, an individual of many talents is our second of three new editors. She is a great writer and has been a dedicated staff member for the past two years. She is always aware of what is going on at MHS and what great things to write about. I know she will blossom as a leader and will continue to write beautifully next year. And finally, Alex Kerai, our third new editor, is a talented and outgoing individual who always has something great to say. He has been in Headlight since he was a freshman and has always been a dedicated Headlight staff member. He will shine bright in the year to come, I am sure of it. All three are destined to do great things for Headlight. I want them to know that Headlight is what they make of it. Headlight has become sort of like my own child these past two years. I have come to love it and really take care of it. I hope they will do the same. With their teamwork and dedication, they can get as much as they put into it. I encourage them to work hard and enjoy their time as leaders and as writers.

Finally, I would like to say thank you. Thank you to all of the people who have made the past four years incredible for me. Thank you to Mr. Higgins for always being the best mentor, friend and advisor. Thank you to all of the other current Headlight staff. You are all awesome! Thank you to all of my friends and family for always being there for me and for encouraging me to do my best. Thank you especially to my grandmother, Ginny Power for always reading Headlight and for being my #1 fan always. For the rest of my life, I will never forget the memories I have of high school and the people I have come to know and love. Four years have come and gone, but the memories I have will last forever.

Grace Perry is a graduation senior of the Marblehead High School class of 2014. She has been Editor in Chief of Headlight for the past two years with Dan Rosenberg. In the fall of 2014, she will be attending the University of Massachusetts Amherst to study Communications and minor in Film Studies. She has been apart of Headlight for three years and will continue to use her writing skills in the years to come.
