Proceeds of Annual Beatles Benefit Send Musicians into Local Schools

All You Need is Love is the Ninth Annual Beatles Benefit at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Marblehead on Saturday, June 14 at 7:30. Proceeds send musicians into the local schools

The origins of the Unitarian-Universalist “Beatles Benefit” are simple enough.  Money was needed to build a handicap accessible bathroom at the church in 2005 so why not hold a benefit concert with musicians playingBeatles music and call it “She Came in Through the Bathroom Window?”  Additional funds were still needed and a secondbenefit, again with all Beatles songs, was called “Help.”  The bathroom was built and that should be the end of the story.  Wrong.  Everyone agreed that it was too much fun and nine years later the shows continue to be produced. Now the proceeds go to a special fund that the church has set up to help send musicians of all kinds into the schools for concerts and workshops.

This past year the General Glover School was the recipient of a special performance by The Nields at an after school event that both students and their families were able to attend.  The sister duo from Northampton, MA delighted the audience with original songs as well as songs made famous by recently departed folksinger, Pete Seeger.  Also, the Marblehead Municipal Community Charter School received a presentation by Kim and Reggie Harris called “Dream Alive: A Celebration of African American History.” Kim and Reggie not only sang relevant songs having to do with black history in the United States but also showed a video that went into more depth on the subject.

In previous years the UUCM Fund “Music in our Schools” has sponsored shows and songwriting and violin workshops at the High School, Coffin School, Glover School, and Charter School.  One very special event occurred when Grammy Award winning composer and fiddler, Jay Ungar, worked with students from the Symphony by the Sea Youth Orchestra and played with them during a concert at the me&thee coffeehouse later that evening.   Music instructors are encouraged to be in touch with UUCM if they are interested in taking part in this program next school year. This year’s benefit will take place at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Marblehead on Saturday, June 14 at 7:30 p.m.  The musicians who are donating their time and talent are: Birdsong at Morning, Susan Cattaneo, Julie Dougherty, Barbara Kessler, Kirsten and Dave, Molly Pinto Madigan, None of the Above, Scrambled Eggs, Semi-Aquatic Rodent, T Max and The Whiskey Boys.

Tickets are available www.uumarblehead.org., at Brown Paper Tickets  (http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/700418), Spirit of 76, Arnould’s Gallery, or at the door.  Adults: $20, Children $5 or Family package: $45.  Refreshments will be served throughout the evening. Contributions can also be made out to UUCM  and sent directly to the church at 28 Mugford Sreet, Marblehead, MA 01945.
