The Nouveau Englander: An Introduction

Since Ipswich doesn't have a Patch, I thought I might start a verbal journey here. I'm new to the area, but I am endlessly curious about the how's an whys of living on the North Shore.

Allow me first to say that being new to the area, I have a heck of a lot to learn. I fell in love with the North Shore a few years back, when my daughter started at Salem State. Being from "elsewhere," we'd heard of Harvard...the sports teams out of Boston, and quite frankly very little else.

Allow me to say I have never set foot in Boston. Ipswich is where I call home. I'm getting used to Danvers, and occasionally drive out to Cape Ann...but as of yet, I haven't gone into the city. That surprises people around here. The assumption is that I have been there, liked the city and came here. No, indeed. I came here, fell in love with the area, and came to stay. Someday I might actually visit the city...but not until I've done some serious exploring here in Essex, and other lovely places.

I don't antique.

I hate the New York and Philly teams - so you can't get a rise out me with that.

I also think it is just awful of you guys to hide what an amazing place this is. I have never met such nice, charming, genuine people in my life. But I swear, I will keep the secret. I won't tell anyone. It will be between you and I.

I have a hundred questions already - and hope to make each one into a blog. No, I'm not a tourist, just a person who was ready to begin a new life, in a new place. I'm hoping the people around here will tolerate the questions. Fresh eyes, and great curiosity will be my hallmark. So, let's start out with this one - what's with the roast beef? When I first visted Salem I was stunned by the sheer number of restaurants that had "& Roast Beef" in their signage. I mean, dozens of places. A friend suggested it was sort of like the "Philly Cheesesteak" - but I am brazen enough to ask.

So, why Roast Beef? When did it start? And while you're at it, do you have a favorite place for yours, and why? Is there a way to eat it, that is better than another? I am eagerly looking forward to the replies - and I already have an idea for my next blog, so have at it! Where's the beef? And why? Oh, and just call me Lisa. Pleased to meet you.

Welcome to the North Shore! Those of us who have lived here our entire lives (Danvers "Townie"), really do appreciate what it has to offer. I can tell you that when relatives who have moved out of state return, it's all about the food and visiting favorite restaurants - we have SO many from which to choose. I am not sure about why there are so many roast beef "joints," but they are primarily run by Greek folks. And, yes, Nick's in North Beverly is my favorite! I really appreciate your comment, "I have never met such nice, charming, genuine people in my life. But I swear, I will keep the secret. I won't tell anyone." I have always felt that way, maybe because it's my nature, but we do get a very bad "rap" for being cold and not inclusive. Thanks for saying that! For someone like yourself, the Patch is a terrific resource!

Nick's (Beverly), King's (Salem) or Prime (114 Danvers) are excellent choices. 3-way or sauce and mayo are my FAVs. Sometimes i like the role buttered and grilled too. I'm not sure when this roast beef thing originated but I'm 46 and I always remember eating it. Especially late night, when my parents used to bring it home after a night out. I think "Bill and Bob's" and Kelly's may have been the pioneers. They are good too, but others have improved on it. And like Philly Cheese Steaks, they don't do Roast Beef anywhere else like they do on the north shore.

We have friends that come from the Worcester area just for Supreme's Roast Beef in Danvers! They don't have anything like this out there! I don't know why or how it all got started, but I grew up with Bill and Bob's, Nicks and Supreme's and I can't imagine life without them!!

Wow! I didn't get the alerts for this---but I was going through the mail, and finally found some. I can't thank you all enough for the great replies---and when I am back on my feet again ( a little light foot surgery, I will have to track down the faves. Thanks again for the tips...and upward and onwards!

Welcome to Ipswich Lisa! I live here as well but I work for Patch, small world! Chick's roast beef near the fire station is a town favorite if you want something locally :) Also, everything Pomodori makes is always excellent, and they deliver which doesn't hurt!
