MBTA to Begin Late Night Service Next Year

The one-year pilot program is set to begin in the spring

By Liz Taurasi

The MBTA will extend its service past 1 a.m. in the spring, as part of a one-year pilot program, according to the Boston Globe. Beginning in March or April, all subway lines and the 15 most popular bus routes will run service until 3 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.

In an interview with the Globe, Governor Deval Patrick has secured the $20 million in funding, along with pledges from corporate sponsors to launch the service in 2014.

MBTA service currently ends at 1 a.m., which doesn’t jive with bars and restaurants closing at 2 a.m. in the city, as well as schedules of late night workers throughout Boston.

The Globe says the new late service will also include the Silver Line.
