Marblehead Celebrates Veterans in Historic Abbot Hall

Vietnam War era veterans received special recognition.

A day to say thank you. Veterans Day.

And a day to appreciate the richness that veterans bring to life in Marblehead, where history and patriotism and service intersect and endure.

These were points Veterans Day speaker Capt. Kevin Adams made in historic Abbot Hall's auditorium Monday morning.

The room echoed those qualities.

A sturdy, well preserved room with light and dark wood, horseshoe gallery, ornate windows, stage and numbered leather seats gave the room a timeless quality.

VFW Commander William McKenzie opened the ceremonies reflecting on soldiers who fought the good fight and who loved liberty.

A few hundred people filled the auditorium, among them veterans and their families and children.

Main speaker Kevin Adams, who served as a US Army intelligence officer, said some of the greatest lessons he has learned came from veterans.

He urged younger people to not just say thank you to veterans but to get to know them.

Among the veterans who received special recognition Monday were those who served during the Vietnam War.

A good number of Marblehead veterans who served from August 1964 - May 1975 received Commemorative Awards.

The service included singing, America the Beautiful by the Marblehead High School choir, accompanied on piano and a pleasure to hear.

The singing and appreciation thank yous in and of themselves.
