Glovers Regiment seeks former members

It’s nearly 2014, and for Glover’s Marblehead Regiment, that means the start of the 40th year of this historic colonial reenacting group.

In its first act of celebration, the Regiment invites all present and former members of the group to be guests at the 40th Anniversary Commemorative March to Burial Hill and Celebratory Dinner on Saturday, January 25, at Old North Church. In kit, if possible (that means, in your Regiment outfit), but not required.  If you are among this august group, please visit the GMR website (www.gloversregiment.org ), or contact Captain Seamus Daly (sdaly2@comcast.net) , for plans and detail.

Reestablished in 1974, two years before the nation’s Bicentennial and during the preparations for America’s 200th birthday, Glover’s Marblehead Regiment originally attracted a motley but earnest crew of historians, amateur and professional, some of whom could actually claim blood kinship with members of the original Glover’s Regiment.  (Recall that this was the regiment of hearty sailors chosen by General Washington to serve him at Cambridge, and who rowed him and his hundreds of troops, cannons, and horses across the frigid Delaware River on Christmas night in 1776, before the decisive Battle of Trenton.)

Glover’s Regiment. You’ve seen the worthy lads march in every Marblehead parade this side of Memorial Day and the Christmas Walk; you’ve seen them row across Marblehead Harbor every December in commemoration of the Delaware crossing.  You may have heard their booming cannon salutes on the Fourth of July. And you and your family may well have enjoyed their annual summer weekend colonial encampment at Fort Sewall.

This coming summer, the GMR encampment will be the weekend of July 11-13 and the Regiment is planning a larger than usual event to mark the 40th Anniversary celebrations. However, the group is now eager to connect with former members.
