Symphony by the Sea Concert - A Memorable Journey

Symphony by the Sea invites the North Shore communities to experience a
deeply soulful and memorable journey at its winter concert on Thursday evening,
February 27 in Marblehead at Abbot Hall  with a program entitled, “Commemorate:
Religious and Folk Traditions in the Concert Hall.”

 The concert features Maestro
Donald Palma as guest soloist performing double bass in Max Bruch's celebrated treatment of Kol Nidre (All
Vows), the beloved prayer of the Jewish High Holidays.  Traditionally
chanted by the Cantor, it is the haunting melody that has entranced worshippers
for centuries. In Bruch's setting of the traditional melody, the solo
instrument imitates the rhapsodic voice of a cantor chanting the liturgy.
Although written originally for cello and orchestra, Bruch's adagio takes on
special emotional depth when performed on the bass violin.

Also on the program is John Williams’ Three Pieces from Schindler's List.
Inspired by the heroic life of Oskar Schindler, a German businessman
who saved over a thousand Jewish refugees from death by employing them in his
factories, Steven Spielberg's film garnered seven Academy Awards, including
Best Picture and Best Original Score.  From John Williams: "The
film's ennobling story, set in the midst of the great tragedy of the Holocaust,
offered an opportunity to create not only dramatic music, but
also themes that reflected the more tender and nostalgic aspects of Jewish life
during these turbulent years."

The program will include
“Jewish Jazz”:  the Klezmer Music
performed by Guttmann’s Klezmer All
Stars.
  Taking root in
medieval Eastern Europe, Klezmer Music gradually spread from Russia,
Romania and the Ukraine into Western Europe and the U.S., absorbing along
the way elements borrowed from folk music, gypsy music, pop and jazz.  And music of Ernest Bloch, From Jewish
Life, 3 Sketches for Violoncello and Orchestra (1924)
Prayer–Supplication-Jewish Song.
  This
Swiss-American composer lived and worked in Geneva, Brussels, Frankfurt and
Paris before settling in the U.S. in 1916, becoming an American citizen several
years later.

From the most sacred to the silver
screen, the music is sure to take the audience on a memorable journey, rich
with texture and meaning, haunting melodies and toe-tapping rhythms.
