OPENING RECEPTION FOR GUANGHUI XU AT STETSON GALLERY

STETSON GALLERY HOSTS SPECIAL EXHIBIT
BY VISITING CHINESE ARTIST GUANGHUI XU

The Stetson Art Gallery in the Unitarian Universalist Church of Marblehead is hosting a special two-week exhibit of artworks by Salem State University visiting scholar Guanghui Xu from Dec. 16-31. Xu will hold an opening reception Sunday, Dec. 22, from noon-2 p.m. The gallery is part of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Marblehead, 28 Mugford St., Marblehead.
Guanghui Xu holds a Bachelor’s degree in Visual Transmission and Art Design and a Masters degree in Environmental Art Design from Chinese universities. He is an assistant professor of art at the School of Architecture in the China Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. Xu came to Salem State for one year to study and better understand the ways in which higher education is taught in the United States, and to work with faculty and students to learn their teaching methods and materials, including ways teachers and students interact. Upon his return to China, he will apply what he learned as he continues his pursuit of a PHD in Architectural Art and Technology.
Xu’s works range from room sized installations to wall-hung paper sculptures to screen printed impressionistic works. While the size of Stetson Gallery won’t allow a large installation, the selection of works on exhibit will demonstrate the range of Xu’s artistic expression.
The special exhibit of Guanghui Xu’s artworks is being coordinated through the efforts of Karen Gahagan, Director of the Center for Creative and Performing Arts at SSU. Gahagan is also the Music Director of UUCM. Xu’s exhibit extends the reach of the UUCM WISH program (Welcome International Students to our Homes), an informal organization designed to introduce international college students to American life. The program was instituted and is organized by UUCM member Hugh Stewart.
Stetson Gallery is open weekdays 9 a.m.-2p.m. (1 p.m. Mondays) and during Church events at other times. The Winter, 2014 Gallery season has been planned, and will feature the following artists: January, Nicholas Kent; February, Barbara Naeser; March, Elisabeth Neville; April, William Cloutman; May, Daly Inspirations, watercolors by students of Elaine Caliri Daly; June, the photographs of Rev. Wendy von Zirpolo. The curators welcome inquiries at stetson@uumarblehead.org.
