Glovers Regiment Camps at Fort Sewall This Weekend!

It’s a time-honored tradition: Marblehead’s Fort Sewall is transported back in time
to the 1770s when the sailors, wenches, and camp followers of Glovers Marblehead Regiment stage their
annual colonial encampment there. This year, camp will be open July 13 and 14 for all to see and visit.

The
public is encouraged to visit Fort Sewall, starting at 10 a.m. Saturday
morning, July 13, for tours of the camp and the Fort, a peek inside a Rev War
tent (yes, Regiment lads and lasses do live, sleep, and cook outdoors all
weekend long), and a taste of what life was like in the later years of the 18th
century. At 11 a.m., children are invited to “drill like the sailors” on the
main grounds of Fort Sewall.

At
2:30 p.m., the good men of Glovers will assemble at Seaside Park, where they will
engage British troops in battle. There
will be plenty of good viewing for all, but come early for good seats.

Meanwhile,
in camp, visitors to the Fort will see open cooking fires, sutlers selling
wonderful wares -- our favorite Big Bear
T
rading and blacksmith Dean Rantz –-
along with men, women and children dressed in the clothing of the period.

Colonial
musicians will herald the start of camp by marching through Marblehead on
Saturday morning.  Then, the day will be
filled with colonial forces drilling and marching, musicians playing, camp
followers cooking, and plenty of activities common to an 18th
century military encampment.

Camp
will close to the public Saturday at 5:30 p.m., but will reopen on Sunday for
the traditional colonial church service at Fort at 11 a.m.; the public is

warmly welcome to attend. Camp will be open again to the public in the afternoon.

The
full camp schedule is shown below and will be posted on the
Glovers Marblehead Regiment website at www.gloversregiment.org.

Come join us in the 18th Century!!
