JANICE STANLEY’S PAINTINGS AND MANDALAS TO BE EXHIBITED IN

STETSON GALLERY THROUGHOUT FEBRUARY

Local artist Janice Stanley's collection of oil and acrylics on canvas and computer generated Mandala prints will be the featured exhibit in the Stetson Gallery of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Marblehead, 28 Mugford St., Marblehead. There will be an opening reception at the Gallery on Sunday February 3 from 12-2 p.m., with light refreshments served.

Janice Stanley says she was not “a natural born artist,” but art has been an integral part of her life for decades. Originally from Westbury, NY, the former Janice Perney moved to Marblehead 25 years ago with her then-6-month-old daughter, Jessica. The exhibit of her works represents how art has served as a healing vehicle in her life. The exhibit of what became sweet medicine for the eyes and the soul, and which has been in process for more than six years, is now ready to share with the public.

Janice Stanley earn a BA in psychology from The New School for Social Research. She also studied with Erica Steinberger to earn an art therapist degree and also earned an M.Ed in school and community counseling and a certification in guidance counseling. Her career as a child therapist took her to JT Berry, a residential setting at  Danvers State Hospital, as a consultant for Andover and Lawrence schools, and to the Marblehead public school system.

Unfortunately, Stanley became ill with Gerd Cushings syndrome, which left her unable to work in her profession, and a delayed diagnosis caused her to lose speech, memory and cognitive skills, leaving her disabled.

Stanley started the healing process by using her art therapy skills on herself. Creating art and being active in the artist community physically and on line is therapeutic, as a productive way to channel her creativity and energy. In collaboration with a friend, she has created Art Unique Prints, where her digital mandalas may be purchased.

Stetson Gallery was founded in 1995 to showcase artist members of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Marblehead and the wider artistic community. Stetson Gallery is open during Church events, when Church staff are in the building, and by appointment. If Gallery lights are on and the door to the Gallery is unlocked, visitors may enjoy the exhibit. In addition, the Church Administrator and the curators can make themselves available to show an exhibit.
